Brotato: Primal Dread

System requirements

Quick answer

The DLC lists the same minimums as the base game: Windows 7+ or macOS 10.12 or Linux, a 2 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM, 128 MB OpenGL 3+ graphics and 200 MB of storage. Steam itself now requires Windows 10 or newer.

Primal Dread's system requirements are the base game's system requirements. The DLC page on Steam shows the same block, down to the 200 MB storage line, which makes sense: the DLC runs inside the base game's executable and adds assets, not a second engine.

So the practical answer to "can I run Primal Dread" is "can you run Brotato", and the requirements for that are unusually small.

Two footnotes matter more than the table.

The Windows 7 line has an asterisk. Steam's own note under it reads: "Starting January 1st, 2024, the Steam Client will only support Windows 10 and later versions." The game may list Windows 7, but the client will not run there. Treat Windows 10 as the real floor.

200 MB is the whole game, not the DLC. There is no separate DLC install size listed. If you already have Brotato installed, Primal Dread adds to that footprint rather than creating a second one.

Reading a 2010 spec sheet

A 2 GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM and 128 MB of OpenGL 3+ graphics is a 2010-era specification. Brotato is a 2D arena shooter with sprite-based enemies and a fixed camera; it does not need a GPU in any meaningful sense.

That has three consequences worth stating, because they come up in every "will this run on my laptop" thread:

  • Integrated graphics are fine. OpenGL 3+ is the only graphics requirement, and any integrated GPU from the last decade supports it.
  • RAM is the real constraint on old machines. 4 GB is the minimum for the game, but the operating system and browser will compete for it. A machine with 4 GB total and Chrome open is a machine with less than 4 GB for the game.
  • Storage is not a consideration. 200 MB is smaller than most save folders for modern games.

The DLC does not raise the bar

This is the question the DLC's own page answers by showing the same requirements: the Jungle does not require more than the Crash Zone. New enemies, new effects and a new stat are content, not a rendering load.

If your machine ran Brotato before 2 November 2026, it runs Primal Dread. If it struggled, the DLC will not fix that, but it will not make it worse either.

Platform notes

WindowsSupportedSteam client requires Windows 10+
macOSSupported10.12 minimum
LinuxSupportedSteamOS and desktop Linux both listed
Steam DeckPlayable in practiceThe Linux build and the low requirements make it a natural fit

Steam Deck compatibility is not an official claim in the store data, so treat that row as an observation rather than a certification. What is official is Linux support and a 200 MB footprint, which is the profile of a game that runs well on handheld hardware.

Cloud saves and install size

Steam Cloud is listed for the game, so saves follow the account rather than the machine, and the DLC uses the same save. Storage stays at 200 MB because the DLC is content inside the base install, not a second download with its own footprint.

Controller and input

The store page lists full controller support, and the game's co-op categories include shared split screen, which implies controller-friendly local play. Brotato is playable with keyboard and mouse, and the twin-stick structure means a controller is a legitimate preference rather than a compromise.

Two practical notes for the DLC specifically: the shop is where you will spend the most menu time, and the shop is a pointer interface. On a controller, that is the slowest part of the game. If you are learning a new Evolution path and reading tooltips, keyboard and mouse is faster.

What to check if the game will not launch

Four things, in order:

  1. Verify the game files. Steam's file verification fixes most post-update launch failures.
  2. Disable mods. The launch post's warning is explicit, and an outdated mod is the most common cause of a crash after a content update. See the mods page.
  3. Check the OS. Windows 7 with an old Steam client will not launch anything, regardless of the game's listed minimum.
  4. Check storage. Not for space, but for a full disk: a full drive breaks save writes and can present as a crash on wave load.

For the patch that fixed the launch-week bugs, see 1.2.0.1.

Three omissions

Three omissions worth knowing. There is no recommended tier, only a minimum, which for a 2D game means the minimum is the recommendation. There is no VRAM figure, because 128 MB of OpenGL 3+ memory is a floor from another era of hardware. And there is no listing for the DLC separately, so a store page that shows 200 MB is showing the base game's footprint, not an additional 200 MB on top.
