Patch 1.2.0.1 is live - mutagen drops up to 3%, baby Trex speed capped
Brotato: Primal Dread

What 1.2 did to Nightmare

Quick answer

Update 1.2.0.0 rebalanced Crash Zone difficulty spikes, cut projectile counts on Horned Fly, Bloated Pufferfish and Horned Spitter, slowed Scaled Stargazer and buffed eight older characters including Diver, Druid, Dwarf, Hiker, Farmer, Fisherman, Beastmaster and One Armed.

Nightmare is the difficulty Brotato added before Primal Dread, and it is the one the developers admitted they had not had time to tune: "After the release of Nightmare difficulty, we quickly had to switch our focus to Primal Dread and didn't take the necessary time to change this new difficulty."

Update 1.2.0.0 is that tuning pass. It is free, it shipped with the DLC, and it is mostly nerfs. If you bounced off Nightmare, this is the update that makes it worth another look.

Crash Zone nerfs

The headline change is not a single number, it is a category: "Rebalanced several difficulty spikes in the Crash Zone, particularly during waves where the combined enemy spawns could become overwhelming."

That is a design fix more than a balance fix. A difficulty spike is a wave where the spawn combination produces a fight that is harder than the waves around it for reasons the player cannot control. Flattening those spikes makes Nightmare more consistent without making it easy.

EnemyChangeEffect
Horned FlyFewer projectilesLess chip damage from a flyer you cannot easily reach
Bloated PufferfishFewer projectilesFewer overlapping volleys in a crowd
Horned SpitterFewer projectilesRanged pressure reduced at range
Scaled StargazerSlower movementEasier to kite, easier to keep at range
Brainy SquidLess healthDies faster, which matters in a crowd
Cool WalrusLess healthSame
JunkieSlower movementLess pressure from a fast body
Dire JunkieSlower movementSame, for the upgraded version
Horned BruiserLess healthThe bruiser is now a shorter fight

Read as a list, the pattern is clear: projectile counts down, movement speeds down, health down. Nothing got stronger. That is a deliberate direction for a difficulty that launched overtuned.

Character buffs

Eight older characters were buffed in the same update. These matter because they change which characters are worth picking in a Nightmare run, and because several of them are characters players had written off.

CharacterBeforeAfterPractical effect
DiverEnemy health modifier 250%200%A 50-point swing on the run's core penalty
DruidFruit spawn chance 34More sustain without spending
DwarfEngineering every 6 killsEvery 5 killsFaster structural scaling
Hiker5 materials per 10 steps, with a speed penalty5 materials per 8 steps, no speed penaltyPure buff: more income, no drawback
FarmerNo starting GardenStarts with a GardenPassive income from wave 1
FishermanGold penalty -50%-40%Less economic drag on a gold-focused character
BeastmasterOne RatAn extra RatMore bodies, more damage
One ArmedWeapon counted onceCounts as 3 extra weapons for set bonusesSet bonuses become reachable with one weapon

Hiker is the biggest change in that table, because removing a movement penalty from a movement-based character is not a tweak; it is a different character. One Armed is the most conceptually interesting: the buff does not add damage, it adds set-bonus counting, which changes what a one-weapon run can build toward.

Shop changes

Two lines in the same update change the shop, and they apply to every difficulty, not just Nightmare.

ChangeBeforeAfter
Chance to be offered a weapon you own20%23%
Early-wave bonus on that chance5%7%
Bonus per different weapon ownednone+2% each, up to 6
Chance to be offered a weapon of your classnone+1% per different weapon owned, up to 6

Together these push players toward coherent weapon pools: six different weapons in two classes now generates more relevant offers than six copies of one weapon. In a Nightmare run, where bad shop luck is a run-ender, that is a meaningful consistency buff.

How to use this if you are returning

Start with the characters, not the difficulty. Pick a buffed character (Hiker, Diver, Farmer) and run Nightmare on the Crash Zone. You are testing two changes at once, and the character buffs are large enough to be felt.

Do not expect the DLC to make Nightmare easier. Primal Dread adds harder enemies, not easier ones. The Jungle on Nightmare is a separate challenge from the Crash Zone nerfs.

Re-read the enemy list. If your old Nightmare plan depended on a specific enemy's projectile count or speed, it changed. The table above is the whole list.

Check your mods first. The launch post's warning applies here too: outdated mods conflict with the update. A "Nightmare is still impossible" report from a modded client is usually a mod problem.

Untouched by the patch

Nightmare's core rules, its reward structure and its unlock conditions are untouched. The update rebalanced enemies and characters, not the mode. If Nightmare was not for you before because of its structure rather than its spikes, 1.2 does not change that.
