Patch 1.2.0.1 is live - mutagen drops up to 3%, baby Trex speed capped
Brotato: Primal Dread

Your first three Jungle runs

Quick answer

Start with a forgiving character, learn what mecha parts and mutagens look like on the floor, and commit to one Evolution path by wave 5. Do not split between Mecha and Mutation: each path's enemies get worse without the matching payoff.

The first three runs of a new DLC are where most players bounce. Not because the content is unfair, but because Primal Dread adds two new systems on top of a game that already asks you to learn a shop, a wave rhythm and six weapon slots.

This is a plan for those three runs. It assumes you have played Brotato before and know what a shop is; if you have not, play the base game first, because the Jungle assumes the vocabulary.

Run one: learn the floor

Pick Veteran or Archaeologist. Both have documented mechanics that work without a build.

  • Veteran is built to face swarms without time to heal, so it forgives the mistake every new Jungle player makes: standing in the pack because you are still reading the screen.
  • Archaeologist gives you a route: dig sites and crates, each one making you stronger. In a new arena, a character that tells you where to go is worth more than a character with better numbers.

Do not commit to an Evolution path in run one. Pick up whatever you walk over, note what mecha parts and mutagens look like on the floor, and finish or die around wave 10. The goal is not the win; it is learning what the Jungle's hazards do.

Run two: commit to a path

Same character, or Poacher if you want the scaling character. This time, choose by wave three.

SignalPath
Your first shops offered weapons you likedMecha
Your first shops offered items with effects you understandMutation
You picked up two or more mecha parts before wave 5Mecha
You picked up a mutagen early and your item pool is strongMutation

The rule is not which path is stronger. It is that a split run pays both paths' enemy taxes. Oil and acid in the same arena, with lasers and mutant packs, is a wave that kills players who hedged.

Run three: build the shop

With a path chosen, the shop becomes the game. Three habits:

Buy fewer things. A weapon build wants six keepers, not six placeholders. An item build wants strong items, because Mutation copies at random and a bag of junk duplicates badly.

Take materials seriously on Mecha. Dismantling mecha weapons converts materials into parts, which means a bad shop is not a wasted shop in a Mecha run.

Skip fossils unless you can commit. The fossil set scales with itself, so a fossil at wave 3 is an engine and a fossil at wave 15 is a stat item. See the items page.

Five deaths, and their fixes

DeathCauseFix
Surrounded at wave 6You fought in a pack instead of kiting itKeep moving; the Jungle punishes standing
Slowed and killedOil puddle plus a charging packFight on clean ground, always
Melted by acidYou finished a kill inside a poolGive up the kill
Laser to the faceYou moved along the beam instead of off itStep perpendicular to the beam
Boss wall at wave 20Your build clears crowds, not single targetsKeep one weapon that hits one thing hard

None of those are about stats. All five are about position, which is the actual skill the Jungle tests.

Unlock order

Ten characters, all unlocked by winning a run with them. Practically:

  1. Win with Veteran. It is the most forgiving and gives you a second character to learn with.
  2. Win with Archaeologist on Mecha. The route plus the weapon path is the simplest coherent build in the DLC.
  3. Then chase the rest. The roster is on the characters page.

Do not start with the five characters that have no public mechanic descriptions. You will spend a run learning something nobody has written down.

Materials, in one paragraph

Materials are the run's currency: enemies drop them, waves pay them out, and the shop takes them. In the Jungle, the two Evolution pickups sit on the same floor as materials, so every detour has a price. Walking to a mutagen on the far side of an acid pool costs you shop money as well as risk, and that trade is the whole early game.

Settings and setup

Three things to check before run one:

  • Mods off. The launch post is explicit: outdated mods conflict. See the mods page.
  • Item Set on default. If you are coming back after a break, check what is toggled on in the Item Set menu. A "why are there no pets" question is usually a pack that is switched off.
  • Language. If you play in a non-English language, 1.2.0.1 fixed the Mechanize translation, so the Mecha path's UI should read correctly now.

If you remember one thing

The Jungle is not harder because the numbers are bigger. It is harder because the floor is smaller: holes remove routes, oil removes speed, acid removes ground. Every beginner death in this DLC is a positioning death wearing a stats costume.

Play slower than you think you need to, keep a clean lane, and commit to one Evolution path by wave five.

If you only take one thing

Commit to a path by wave five and never fight on a hazard. Those two habits carry a first clear further than any item choice, because the Jungle's losses come from split builds and bad ground far more often than from a weak shop.
