Primal Dread vs Abyssal Terrors
Abyssal Terrors (October 2024) added The Abyss with 20 waves, 14 characters, 16 weapons and 30-plus items. Primal Dread (November 2026) adds The Jungle with 20 waves, 10 characters, 17 weapons, 40 items and the Evolution stat. Both cost $3.99.
The two Brotato DLCs cost the same and promise the same run length, which makes the comparison unusually clean. Abyssal Terrors launched on 25 October 2024. Primal Dread launched on 2 November 2026. Both are $3.99 at list price, both add a map with twenty waves, and both are add-ons to the same base game.
Everything else is different.

Where Abyssal wins
Characters. Fourteen against ten is not a rounding error. If you play Brotato for the roster, Abyssal gives you four more potatoes for the same money, and two years of community knowledge about how each one plays.
Price today. At $3.19 on a 20% discount, Abyssal is eighty cents cheaper than Primal Dread right now. It has also had two years of patches and a settled meta.
Documentation. Two years of guides, videos and discussion exist for Abyssal's characters. Primal Dread's five undocumented characters are still a mystery in public, which matters if you like reading before you play.
Where Primal Dread wins
Items. Forty against thirty-plus. Items are the part of Brotato that changes a run most, because the shop pool is what you actually interact with between waves.
A new stat system. Abyssal's headline is "new game mechanics"; Primal Dread's is Evolution, a stat with two explicit directions that changes enemy visuals and attack patterns. A stat system that mutates enemies is a bigger structural addition than another map modifier.
Pets. Three new pets, confirmed in the pre-launch post. Abyssal's store description does not list pets as a feature, which does not mean it has none, but it does mean Primal Dread is the pack that advertises them.
It is current. Every patch since 2 November 2026 lands on Primal Dread's content first. The 1.2.0.1 balance pass touched mutagens, which only exist in the Jungle.
Design difference in one paragraph
Abyssal Terrors went down: an alien ocean, a new map, new enemies, and mechanics that changed how a run plays. Primal Dread went sideways: a jungle, a new map, new enemies, and a stat that changes what the enemies become. Both are content for the same loop. Abyssal emphasises breadth (fourteen characters); Primal Dread emphasises systems (two Evolution paths and forty items).
Which to buy first
| Your situation | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New to Brotato DLC, like characters | Abyssal Terrors | 14 characters, two years of guides, cheaper today |
| New to Brotato DLC, like build crafting | Primal Dread | 40 items and a stat system |
| Own neither, want the current meta | Primal Dread | Newer content, current patches |
| Own Abyssal already | Primal Dread | Different map, different systems, no overlap |
| Want both eventually | Abyssal first | Cheaper now, and you will appreciate the item pool more after |
Do they interact
Barely, and that is good news. Neither DLC requires the other. Item Set can switch either one off independently, which means you can run base plus Jungle, base plus Abyss, or all three.
The one interaction worth knowing: with both installed, the item pool is larger, which dilutes specific item offers. Item Set exists partly to solve that, and it is covered on its own page.
Parts that do not line up
Abyssal's "new game mechanics" is a vague phrase in its own store description, and this site will not guess at what it included. Primal Dread's Evolution is documented in detail by comparison: two named paths, explicit pickup types and explicit enemy changes.
That asymmetry is a real difference in how the two packs were marketed, and it means this page can be specific about Primal Dread and only numerical about Abyssal. The numbers are enough to make the call.
For the Primal Dread side in detail, see what the DLC adds. For the price picture on both, see release date and price.
A note on review counts
The 2,532 reviews for Abyssal against 489 for Primal Dread is not a quality signal, it is an age signal: one pack has been on sale for two years, the other for two days. Normalising by time, both are in the same range of early interest. Anyone comparing those two numbers directly is comparing a launch week to a two-year tail.
Which one ages better
Abyssal has the advantage of being finished: two years of patches, a settled item pool and a community that knows its characters. Primal Dread has the advantage of being current: every patch from here lands on it first, and its systems are the ones the developers are actively tuning.
If you buy one now and the other later, buy Abyssal first and Primal Dread second. If you buy one and never buy the other, buy the one whose content matches the way you play, which is the character question or the item question depending on your answer.
