Release date and price
Primal Dread released on 2 November 2026 and costs $3.99 (3.99 EUR, 3.39 GBP, CNY 18.00). It is a DLC, so the base game is required; the base game was $4.99 at list price and $2.49 while its 50% launch-week discount was live.
Primal Dread is out. It launched on 2 November 2026, and the developers were upfront that the exact hour depended on where you live: their release-time post included a time-zone map and the line "it's between November 2nd and November 3rd". If you are reading this after launch week, the practical answer is that it is available now on Steam for Windows, macOS and Linux.
The price is the part people search for, so it goes first.
| Item | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Brotato: Primal Dread (DLC) | $3.99 | EUR 3.99 / GBP 3.39 / CNY 18.00 per the official announcement |
| Brotato (base game) | $4.99 list | Was $2.49 during a 50% discount at launch; sales rotate |
| Abyssal Terrors (previous DLC) | $3.99 list | $3.19 at a 20% discount when checked on 4 November 2026 |
The DLC has not been discounted yet. That is expected for a pack that is two days old, and it is why the "should I wait for a sale" question has an easy answer right now: the discount history of Abyssal Terrors suggests a 20% cut eventually, which would save you about eighty cents. Waiting a year to save eighty cents on a four-dollar DLC is not a plan.
Two purchases, not one
Two purchases, not one. The DLC is listed as downloadable content for app 1942280, which is the base game. If you own Brotato already, the DLC appears in its DLC list alongside Abyssal Terrors and the free soundtrack-style extras. If you do not own Brotato, buying Primal Dread gives you nothing to launch.
That distinction matters more than it sounds, because the DLC's store page shows the full feature list, screenshots and system requirements. It looks like a game page. It is not one. The "About This Content" block is the tell.
Platforms, and what this site covers
The Steam page lists Windows, macOS and Linux. The DLC inherits the base game's platform support, and the system requirements block on the DLC page is identical to the base game's, down to the 200 MB storage line. Those requirements are on their own page with the per-OS table.
This site documents the Steam build. Not because other platforms do not exist, but because every number here comes from the Steam store page, the Steam patch notes and the game's Steam achievement list. A guide that mixes platforms ends up with advice that is right on one build and wrong on another.
Launch state, by the numbers
Three numbers worth having in your head before you read a review:
- 489 reviews on the DLC store page when checked on 4 November 2026. That is a small sample, two days after release, and it will move fast.
- 10,589 players in the base game at 08:20 CST on 4 November 2026, per Steam's public player count. The DLC does not have its own player count; it runs inside the base game.
- 1.2.0.1, the patch released on 3 November 2026, one day after launch. That is the build this site is written against.
A one-day patch is normal for a content drop this size, and it is also a reminder: any guide written on launch day is describing a build that no longer exists. The patch notes page lists what changed, and the mutagen page covers the change that matters most in practice, a drop rate going from 2% to 3%.
Release timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 8 July 2026 | Primal Dread teaser published |
| 20 August 2026 | Playtest sign-ups opened |
| 8 October 2026 | DLC announced at the Triple-i showcase, dated 2 November, price revealed |
| 30 October 2026 | Release-time post with the time-zone map and the Poacher tease |
| 2 November 2026 | DLC launch, plus free update 1.2.0.0 |
| 3 November 2026 | Patch 1.2.0.1 |
Two things are worth noticing in that timeline. First, the price was announced three and a half weeks before launch, which is unusually early and means the $3.99 figure is not a placeholder. Second, the free 1.2.0.0 update shipped the same day as the DLC, so the "free update" and "paid DLC" halves of launch day are separate things: the Item Set menu and the Nightmare nerfs cost nothing.
Is the price fair
Compare it to the previous pack rather than to the base game. Abyssal Terrors launched at $3.99 in October 2024 with 20 waves, 14 characters, 16 weapons and 30-plus items. Primal Dread launches at $3.99 with 20 waves, 10 characters, 17 weapons, 40 items, three pets and a new stat system.
Fewer characters, more items, and a mechanic that changes enemy behaviour instead of adding another arena modifier. Whether that is better value depends on what you play Brotato for, which is exactly what the verdict page is for. The short version: if you play for build crafting, the DLC gives you more than Abyssal did. If you play for roster variety, it gives you less.
One number to remember
If you only keep one figure from this page, keep $3.99 and the fact that it is a DLC. Everything else, including the base-game discount, changes with sales; the add-on requirement does not.
Checked 2026-11-04. Prices are Steam US store values and move with sales.
